Managing Bipolar Disorder

While everyone experiences fluctuations in mood, cycles of extreme low and high moods can be a sign of bipolar disorder which sometimes is called manic depression. If these depressive, manic or hypomanic episodes significantly impact on your relationships, work, studies and day-to-day life, psychological assistance should be considered. At Psychologists Southern Sydney (PSS) our counselling psychologists work closely with you, your GP or psychiatrist to offer appropriate, coordinated, treatment and support to help you manage your condition and maintain a good quality of life.

Whereas a psychiatrist or GP may prescribe mood stabilising medication our experienced and caring psychologists are trained in behavioural therapies and psychological support. During sessions your PSS psychologist will assist you to develop treatment strategies based on your specific needs. Therapies can include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Family-Focussed Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy.

Developing a Wellness Plan

A useful tool as part of your bipolar therapy is to help you develop a Wellness Plan to manage your condition. The plan development usually includes yourself and a family member or a trusted friend who work together to identify the triggers that can bring on an episode. Signs of mood shift or behaviour are also identified so you and your plan partner can identify shifts early to deal with the episode before it develops further. A Wellness Plan also identifies the responses or actions that should be agreed upon if an episode should occur.

This style of self-education through a Wellness Plan empowers our bipolar clients and their family and friends to cope effectively with mood swings earlier as they arise

Your sessions with Psychologist Southern Sydney may be covered by your Private Health Fund or talk to your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan which could enable you to receive a Medicare Rebate.
