Helping people overcome depression
Our community is waking up to the fact of how common depression is and how it affects one in five Australians at some stage of our lives. It can affect people of all ages, from all walks of life and backgrounds.
How do you know if you have depression?
Most people from time to time feel miserable, sad, ‘blue’ or down but when that feeling stays with you for more than two weeks and affects your life, pleasure, relationships and your usual activities then it’s time to seek support. Depressed people often mentioned feeling downhearted, disappointed, detached or upset.
If you know someone who is feeling depressed, reassure them that it is not something to be ashamed of or to feel guilty about, that it’s not a character flaw or a sign of weakness, or a lack in discipline or personal strength. It is not just a ‘mood’ that someone can ‘snap out of’.
Like any physical illness, depression is very treatable, the earlier the better.
At Psychologists Southern Sydney (PSS) we recognise that no two cases of depression are exactly the same and this is why one of our experienced PSS psychologists in session develops an understanding of who you are, how you feel and how you want to go forward. Our treatment is about building a rapport, listening, identifying issues, developing strategies to help you overcome depression now and in the future.
What causes depression?
Depression can be the result of a number of inter-related factors including stress, hereditary or family history, chemical imbalance in the brain, your personality type or a combination of factors.

How is depression treated?
There are two major forms of treatment for depression that may be used individually or in combination, depending on the type of depression. At psychologists Southern Sydney we only practice the most effective and proven evidence based therapies Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy Schema tTherapy, Mindfulness are just some of the therapies we offer. Through these therapies we work to replace the negative thinking that is making you depressed with healthier strategies and thinking – strategies that will keep working for you long term.
The other treatment is medication prescribed by your GP. Whether you need medication is a discussion to have with your GP or psychiatrist. Over many years we have built a strong relationship with many local St George and Sutherland Shire GPs who refer their patients to us for counselling.
Once you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP you are entitled to a Medicare Rebate for up to 10 sessions with us in a calendar year. Your Private Health Fund may also cover you for psychological services.
