Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)is a common reaction to witnessing or being involved in a traumatic event or ongoing traumatising events. These events could be workplace, traffic or domestic accidents, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, war and torture. PTSD could be caused by exposure to an actual threat or a perceived threat to your safety and life or that of someone else. Everyone reacts differently to these events and while some may be initially be distressed they recover and never have a PTSD episode while others do. In the initial stages after the event people should receive immediate practical, emotional, social and psychological support as needed

Signs of PTSD

For those who develop PTSD they may keep re-experiencing the trauma and have – unwanted thoughts and images related to the distressing event, including dreams and flashbacks. They may also experience avoidance and numbing where they attempt to avoid people, places and activities associated with the trauma. Sufferers may develop loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, feelings of detachment from others, and persistent negative mood or inability to experience positive mood while others have difficulty sleeping, are more irritable and angry, experience poor concentration and memory, increased startle response, and hypervigilance.
