Women’s Health Issues – Perinatal and Postnatal Depression & Menopause
At Psychologists Southern Sydney (PSS) our team of caring, mature psychologists see women of all ages and backgrounds to work through issues which may be affecting their happiness and mental well-being. We offer women counselling and psychological therapies and coaching to help with life’s challenging issues such as relationships, anxiety, stress, career transitions, pregnancy, parenting and family issues, loss and grief, self-esteem, assault, addictions and disordered eating and depression. Sometimes our clients need a confidential ear, someone to work on a particular worrying issue while others need psychological interventions that our highly trained therapists offer.
Two stages of life that women seek psychologists more often is during pregnancy and post pregnancy and menopause.
Perinatal and Postnatal Services
For some women, pregnancy and early parenthood can trigger symptoms of more serious mental health problems. The likelihood is greater for women who have had mental health problems before, who may not have enough support, or who have been through difficult times (e.g. family problems, abuse or loss). Issues may also be caused isolation either caused by distance, culture or both. Australian research indicates that up to one in ten (9 per cent) of women will experience depression during pregnancy — this increases to one in seven (16 per cent) in the year following birth.
You are not alone, if you are finding it hard to cope please seek help. Support or specific care at this time can help women to adjust and prevent more serious mental health problems from developing.
At Psychologists Southern Sydney our empathetic, experienced, psychologists offer Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and psychodynamic therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which has shown to improve depressive symptoms in the perinatal and postnatal period. Therapy involving the mother and the infant may improve mother–infant interaction. We work closely with GPs, psychiatrists and other allied health professionals to help you move forward.
As female psychologists we understand that middle age and menopause can cause women increased stress, anxiety, and fear. This can be caused by both hormonal and emotional change as women deal with getting older, losing family members, and parting with children.
As our bodies change and age it can be very difficult to deal the rapid change and life affecting symptoms of menopause. This can cause problems with relationships at home and work, a feeling of isolation possibly anxiety and even depression.
We can help you through this stage of life to move forward and develop the strategies to develop healthier thinking long term.
